Several significant events took place in Local 103 in 1919 besides Business Agent Smith's promotion. Local 103 was working on an eighteen month agreement which expired December 31, 1920. Journeymen were paid $1.00 per hour for a 44 hour week. There were many new faces in the union as permits to work were given out in the spring. The membership went from 450 to 916 and in September, a combination smoker/stag party was held to welcome home 150 returning war heroes. The veterans were presented with a gold IBEW watch fob, which the officers were sure would be cherished for the rest of their young lives (however, most were pawned during the Depression which was about to strike).
At a union meeting late in 1920, with full employment, after heated debate by the old guard, it was decided that Local 103 could get along fine with one Business Agent and put him in a brand new Studebaker touring car.
