Journeyman License #B19 was issued to John J. Regan, 67 Chelmsford Street, Dorchester, John was born in County Cork, Ireland in 1892, and came to America as a young boy. He was initiated into Local 103 in 1912. John served Local 103 as an Executive Board member, vice-president, Financial Secretary and Business Agent. In 1939, he was appointed International Vice President of the Second District. The Second District consists of the New England states; Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut. John retired in 1968. He was a 73 year member of the IBEW when he died in 1985. John was, as the Second District Vice President, most influential as Chairman at International Conventions. He is credited with saving the International Pension while chairing the 1966 convention, but he got his birth of fire at the 1946 convention in a bitter floor fight over the Presidency. John Regan's name will surface many times in this history of Local 103. His son Robert F. Regan was initiated in 1942 and served as Apprentice Director of Local 103 from 1964 until his retirement in 1984. Robert's son John J. Regan served on the Examining Board of Local 103 from 1978 until 1981.
This family of three generations of Local 103 members is a first example of dedication and service to a Labor Union. I believe that this form of nepotism, and perhaps that word is too harsh for most union men, contributes to the quality of electricians in the union and sets an objective for new members to attempt to leave this union a better one, than they found when they became members, for their sons and daughters.
