Years later, a Local 103 scribe to the Journal, Harrie S. Goodwin, would say the members of Local 103 who kept faith with the IBEW during its first fifteen years lived through the union's most difficult period. Brother Goodwin also went through the 1921 strikes and the Great Depression from 1928-1932. He was initiated in Local 96, Worcester, Mass., in 1902, and held every position from President on down. He transferred to Local 103 where he become widely known as cartoonist for the IBEW Journal until his death in 1940. He also provided cartoons for the American Federationist, the A.F. of L. Journal, Life, Colliers, and Judge magazines, and Worcester and Boston newspapers. "Goody" was he signed his works was an Executive Board member and scribe for Local 103 for many years. He taught electricity in Boston schools from 1920 until his death in 1940.
His son, Paul S. Goodwin, who was initiated in 1930, carried on the devotion to Local 103 his father had. He was Apprenticeship Director of Local 103 from 1948 until 1962 and served on the Executive Board during these years and also served as an appointed Business Manager (by the Executive Board) in 1964. Paul was honored with a testimonial dinner by Local 103 in 1970 in the occasion of his retirement. He died on May 1971. Paul's son, Robert, is a third generation member of Local 103.
Three Journal reports from March through May 1917, discuss the goings on in Local 103. Stag parties, work conditions, and praise of keeping Boston "wet" during the time leading up to the World War, and of members enlisting in the service and officers leaving to work on the War Board. Brothers Ellis L. Dennis and Jack Smith were the Business Agents. E. L. Dennis was replaced by John Queeney when he left the agents job to go to work for the government on the War Board. Andrew B. Johnson served as President in 1909-1910. William J. Roberts in 1914, Martin T. Joyce from 1914 until 1922. Brother Frank A. Williams was Vice President and was the first Chief Examiner and Clerk for the Board of Examiners of Electricians for the state of Massachusetts. Frank L. Kelley served during the war as Financial Secretary and Major Capelle as the Local 103 Scribe (Press secretary).
