On Tuesday, January 17th, LU 35 held its fifth annual ball at Paul Revere Hall, Mechanics Building, Boston. The letters N.B.E.W. in incandescent lights made the hall entrance as bright as daytime. The grand march started at 9 p.m. and was led off by President T. R. Melville and wife, William J. Joyce and sister, William J. Harding and wife, and Frank J. Keefe and wife.
The committee was as follows:
W. Harding, Chairman; D. B. Smith, Treasurer; T. Melville, Secretary; and J. J. Paul,
W. J. Joyce, C. B. Tolford, J. M. Hanrahan, J. F. Phelps, R. J. McIntyre, F. J. Keefe,
J. A. McInnes, J. W. O'Brien, A. Cameron, W. A. Thomas, A. McDonald, I. E. Wilson, S. W. Kimball, F. J. Sheehan, E. D. Calif, J. A. McNeill, M. J. Birmingham, F. Stead, D. J. Bennett, and D. McGilvary.
It was also noted in this article for the first time that Brother William J. Harding was appointed Business Agent at the last union meeting. There is no mention of a previous Business Agent so Harding may be the first (he is the first as far as I can find).
The article continues that business is good but there are a lot of men not in the N.B.E.W., mostly outside men.
"I hope Brother Harding will get out amongst some of these fellows and present them with an application"
