In Boston, an agreement with the Local contractors provided classes on Saturday mornings from 8:00 a.m. until noon. Classes are restricted to indentured apprentices, who are indentured to a joint labor-management committee of three persons from the union and Contractors Association. The committee had full power in administration of the indenture agreement. Four instructors are employed and paid for from funds of the Committee on Apprenticeship Training, Department of Labor, Washington, D.C., (George-Deen funds). The cost of light, heat, custodial services, and materials is divided 50-50 between the city of Boston and these federal funds.
The required hours in school are divided into 4-one hour segments:
- DC motors and controls
- Drawing, blueprint reading and mathematics
- Radio, refrigeration, oil burners and code
- AC motors and controls
It is agreed the apprentice will attend these classes for 144 hours per year, or 576 hours during a four year apprenticeship. In four years, if an apprentice works 50 weeks a year, he would also receive 8,000 hours of on the job training.
The cost is negligible to the city of Boston and of no cost to the industry.
Apprentices are also encouraged to attend evening school at Boston Trade on Parker Street. It costs $1.00 to enroll and the dollar is returned if the course is completed. It prepares for the state licensing exam.
