Frank R. Sheehan, who served many years as Recording Secretary, passed away in 1933 and was replaced by long time member Robert Griffin. The Sheehan family has served as officers of Local 103 since the charter was issued. In 1930, sons, brothers, and cousins consisted of Frank R. Sheehan, William F. Sheehan, Frederick Sheehan (initiated in 1924 in first apprentice group), and his brothers Jeremiah and Joseph V. Sheehan. By 1980, they and their offspring would conservatively number 50 to 60 of Local 103’s membership. All of the above mentioned Sheehans served in offices such as Apprentice Director, Business Agent, Executive Board and Examining Board member, and had fifty to sixty bullets on election day, but have proven to be true and loyal members of the Local Union.
I do not adhere to recognition of a member as contributing service above and beyond the call of duty as an officer. If I did, the Sheehan family would qualify for distinguished service commendation for the contribution the three generation have made to serving the best interests of Local 103 consistently over it’s 100 year history.
Fifty percent of the remaining 900 members of Local 103 were unemployed when they went to the polls in June 1934 and elected the third Business Manager of Local 103, William J. Doyle, and President, Frank L. Kelley, who had been in two year hiatus after his defeat in 1932. Also reelected were Robert Griffin, Recording Secretary, and James Kilroe, Treasurer. William Doyle appointed Major Capelle and Jeremiah Sheehan as Business Agents.
Later, Doyle and Sheehan bought a barroom on Washington Street near Blackstone Square and members frequented the bar after union meetings for many years. Jerry Sheehan’s son became a member in the 1960s and Bob Sheehan taught at the Apprenticeship school for many years.
