Enjoy CHOICES As Never Before!
The IBEW and its COMET (Construction Organizing Membership Education Training) program continues to have a major impact on the electrical construction industry. The ABC's survey of merit shop employers confirms that contractors throughout the United States are experiencing a shortage of electricians.
Even with thousands of IBEW electricians continuing to retire with the dignity that collectively-bargained employer-paid pensions provide, the number of IBEW electricians continues to increase.
These new members are now enjoying the many CHOICES that IBEW membership affords them.
- The CHOICE of working for thousands of contractors providing good wages and employer-paid insurance and pension plans.
- The CHOICE of working for their present employer until the IBEW can find them something better.
- The CHOICE of helping to organize their present employer so they, too, will provide good wages and benefits.
- The CHOICE of being able to work in the nonunion sector (salting).
- The CHOICE of learning what their rights are under the National Labor Relations Act, the Fair Labor Standards Act, the Davis-Bacon Act, and other laws that protect workers.

The United States Government Wants You to Join A Union
"Long ago we stated the reason for labor organizations. We said that they were organized out of the necessities of the situation; that a single employee was helpless in dealing with an employer; that he was dependent ordinarily on his daily wage for the maintenance of himself and family; that if the employer refused to pay him the wages that he thought fair, he was nevertheless unable to leave the employer and resist arbitrary and unfair treatment; that the union was essential to give workers opportunity to deal on equality with the employer. "
--Chief Justice Charles Evans Hughs, of the Supreme Court of the United States, in NLRB v. Jones & Laughlin Steel Corp., 301 U.S. 1 at 33.
