RIVERS ELECTRICAL CORPORATION

     275 Centre Street, Unit 1
      Holbrook, MA 02343

This company played right by the anti-union play book. As soon as the company found out that more 65 percent of the employees signed authorization for representation cards, they called their union-busting attorneys and began their campaign of terror.

In the summer of 1997, Local 103 was contacted by some employees of Rivers Electric. They came to the union because they were sick and tired of not being paid the community standard wages for electricians in the area. These workers knew that the only way to improve their standard of living was to join the union.

The quickest and easiest way to discourage union activity is to fire employees. Unfortunately, it worked at Rivers Electric. After the firings and after the "captive audience" meetings, 12 employees decided that maybe joining the union wasn't a good idea. By losing those 12 employees, our momentum in the organizing campaign was lost. The management tactics worked in this case.

Local 103 is committed to organizing the employees of Rivers Electric and despite the temporary setback, the organizing campaign will continue. Eventually, the employees will see through the anti-union masquerade. The more Rivers Electric destroys their employees American Dream, the easier it will be to organize them.
